We’ve all heard about the little blue pill. The drug sildenafil citrate, sold as Viagra, is known as a PDE5 inhibitor and is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It is most often used to treat ED, but it has shown promise in a number of other applications that could be beneficial, not only for dad, but other members of the family.

Spousal relationship: Erectile dysfunction can sometimes cause a rift to develop between husband and wife as their physical relationship diminishes. Viagra, which is available via doctors or even a Viagra ecommerce site, can help them maintain that aspect of their relationship.

Depression in both sexes: Studies are exploring the use of Viagra to offset the sexual dysfunction side effects of certain antidepressants. The depression can hurt a relationship, but so also may the sexual dysfunction caused by the depression medications.

Self-esteem: If a husband can’t maintain an erection or perform for his wife, it could affect his self-esteem. It could possibly make him feel like less of a man. This could have an impact on how he relates to his family. Viagra can help alleviate any ED-related self-esteem issues. Of course, Viagra isn’t the only medication for this. There’s a trustworthy Cialis supplier online, too.

Pregnancy problems: Viagra is being tested as a treatment for maternal hypertension in pregnancy, which can cause premature births. Viagra increases blood flow, which can stimulate fetal growth.

Viagra is being researched as a possible treatment for heart disease, strokes, diabetes, breast cancer, prostate problems, Alzheimer’s disease, and Crohn’s disease. That’s a lot of good uses for a pill designed to treat ED.

Dressing right for the weather can be a pretty important health factor whether in the middle of a hard winter or summer vacationing at the beach.

In cold and wet weather, it is most important to stay not only warm, but also dry. In extremely cold weather you will want to think in terms of layers:

1. Skin Layer; long underwear is best, as it drives wetness away from skin and helps it evaporate

2. Middle layer; think Warm! Wool and/or fleece are safe bets.

3. Outer layer; this is the protective layer and should protect you from water and wetness.

Of course, hats, shades, mittens and gloves are also very important, not to mention the right kind of boots and socks.

In hot weather, dressing correctly is just as important for health; too much sun can be overwhelming.

Protect your head with hats or scarves. In an area with very little shade it is best to wear clothes that actually cover your body rather than having too much skin exposed. Look for natural materials like a natural cotton, that can breathe; this will keep you much cooler than a synthetic material.

Choose natural materials in shoes whether you are wearing sandals or sneakers. Shoes made from real leather, or canvas, are the best ventilation for your feet.

Again sunglasses are important as well as gloves, if you are riding a bike or motorcycle.

Be aware that in extremely hot weather, more clothes can be better for your health than stripping down to the minimum. This is because a layer of clothes can help you retain water as well as shield you from serious sunburn.

The first step to suing for medical negligence is to contact an attorney. You will want an experienced attorney such as a California medical malpractice attorney who regularly handles medical negligence cases. An attorney can advise you if you have a strong case and most will offer a first consultation for free.

For parents, don’t worry about future visits to the doctor for your child’s allergies or general first aid. You can find another physician.

To aid your case, your attorney will need documentation and witnesses. Your attorney will assist you in gathering evidence but you will need to recall names, dates and events. You will have to sign a release so your attorney can get your medical records to prove negligence. Medical records are also usually necessary to prove the damage that has been suffered from the negligence itself. Plaintiffs will need to available for depositions and court hearings if necessary. Sometimes it is possible to settle claims out of court but if a settlement cannot be reached then a court hearing and sometimes civil trial is necessary.

Medical negligence cases can be difficult, but with good documentation and a good attorney, you will be well on your way to gaining justice and financial help for the damages sustained.

If you’re pregnant, you may already be thinking about what you are going to do after the pregnancy. Are you going to be a stay at home mom or take advantage of childcare services?

In either case, your calendar pregnancy software or other tracking methods can help determine when you need to start making arrangements, and those arrangements will depend on the decision you make. If you decide to stay at home, you will need to figure out when is the best time to put in your notice. If you choose childcare, you may have to go ahead and start getting on waiting lists.

When making your decision as to whether to stay at home or use childcare, one of the questions you may have is where kids can get sick the most. You may think that keeping them at home is best, and in most cases, it is (especially if your child has chronic health problems, was born prematurely, or had problems after birth). However, remember that any time you take your child out in public, he or she is being exposed to germs.

Your calendar pregnancy software can also help you with another decision—when to engage a pediatrician. Many mothers like to have one already chosen before the birth, because then they can request that the baby be examined by the pediatrician who will actually be providing continuous care. If you want to do this, your calendar pregnancy program or records will help you determine when the best time to do this will be.

Hand sanitizers have burst onto the market putting up a mean fight against bacteria. Marketed as an effective way to wash your hands without soap or water when neither is available, hand sanitizers appeal to the germ conscious out there, especially those germ conscious people with little children. For these people hand sanitizers are a dream come true.

Hand sanitizers work by stripping away the out layer of oil which sits on the skins epidermis. This is where a lot of different bacteria sit that we come in contact with. It should be noted that most hand sanitizers claim to get rid of 99.9% of bacteria present on the hands. However in the laboratory the hand sanitizer is test on non-human surfaces which are able to be controlled.

Soap and water has been shown by several researchers to be just as, if not more effective than antibacterial hand sanitizers. People have been using good old soap and water to wash hands and keep hygienic for many centuries. The addition of hand sanitizers does not reduce a person’s susceptibility to certain germs any more than the traditional form of hand washing. In fact, there are those in the academic community who believe that the constant use of such antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers in fact weakens the growth of a strong immune system, thus weakening a person’s immune system and making him or her more susceptible to illnesses which are caused by bad bacteria.

There are advantages and disadvantages to using hand sanitizers or soap and water for keeping clean and healthy. Either way you will keep germs at bay.

Parenting can often feel like a thankless job, always pushing for everyone to do their chores, taking care of all the scrapes and bruises accumulated, cleaning up after sick children, and wiping tears away. It can be a tough job being a parent.

Therefore, it’s important to include and make time for family fun. Family togetherness is where the memories will be made. Mom can actually sit back, enjoy herself, and have a little fun, too.

Family activities don’t have to be extravagant or expensive. Some of the simplest and most inexpensive activities can be the most memorable. Taking a picnic lunch to the beach and staying late to watch the sunset will leave lasting memories. Planning a family hike through a park or mountain trail will also be inexpensive but memorable.

There will be times when you will want to include family friends in your fun activities. A BBQ is nice, but why not think out of the box? Instead of waiting for Halloween, plan a masquerade party in the summer months. People will have plenty of time to work on and plan childrens costumes. Setting up a party outside with fairy lights and a bonfire is sure to be a memorable event.

If you’re looking for easy ideas that don’t take a lot of time, why not make Friday’s homemade pizza and a movie night? Have everyone get together, make pizza, and eat it together while watching a movie.

If once a week is too much, how about setting aside time once a month? Whatever you decide, make time for family fun!

A pediatrician is one of the most important professionals in your life after having a baby. From the time of birth, your child will receive regular wellness checks, vaccinations, and urgent care when needed. Infancy and early childhood are particularly important in terms of growth and brain development. If there is an underlying health condition that may impact your child later in life, a pediatrician can help you detect it.

With all of the pediatricians practicing in your area, choosing just one may be intimidating. Here are a few things to consider when looking for a pediatrician:

Start by looking at your insurance network. Pediatricians are the most welcoming of insurance plans; still, some practicing physicians don’t accept particular plans. Your insurance provider can provide you with a list of in-network pediatricians.

Narrow your choices and perform a search of your top two to three pediatricians on Canada 411. The service can help you check a candidate’s background and schedule an appointment.

If you reside in the same area you grew up in, see if your pediatrician is still practicing. Chances are he will remember you and will have your personal medical history. This can prove vital for your child’s health outlook. Plus, you will feel more comfortable, putting your child at ease.

Ask for referrals from friends and loved ones. They can give you an honest opinion that can save you time during your search.

Keep in mind that your pediatric search should commence when you’re pregnant. A pediatrician is needed at the time of birth, and as well as visits soon after birth (typically at two weeks, two months, and so on).

We talk about good diet, exercise, hygiene as some of the ways to keep ourselves healthy but what we miss out in life is- we forget to smile and laugh. Even if we take good diet and exercise regularly to keep ourselves healthy but we can not stay healthy if we are always under stress.

Laughter is the best medicine is well known proverb and it is important to stay cheerful to keep ourselves healthy. Many medical researches have also come up with a number of results that happiness is undoubtedly the best way to stay healthy and there are a number of medical reasons behind it. When a person laughs, it relieves the whole physical tension that the person might have been going through. The muscles of the body get relieved and this saves the person from contractions of muscles and makes him/her healthy.

A lot of time, people suffer from asthmatic problems because of some contraction in the respiratory tract. If a person remains happy, then, they can prevent themselves from such respiratory problems as well. Laughter costs nothing but it pays back a lot. Some of the heart diseases are also caused in the body due to contraction in the heart muscles. Thus, the best way to keep your heart in a good condition is to be cheerful in your life.

Immune system gets a boost due to happiness and laughter. Laughter energizes the immune cells in our body and this improves the ability of these cells to fight with a number of diseases. Thus, even if some bacteria enter our body which cause diseases, the immune cells will be able to fight with them. Enjoy yourselves and cheers!

All of us are aware of the fact that heart is one of the most important organs of our body as it is through heart that blood is supplied to all parts of the body. If a person’s heart is not healthy, then, his body may suffer from many aches due to irregular supply of blood in those parts of the body. Thus, it is very important to keep our heart in good condition.

A lot of people take balanced diet and go to gym to improve the blood circulation so that their heart remains healthy. In spite of these, their heart is still not healthy. Do you know the reason behind it? It is stress and lack of cheerfulness. Stress is one of the major reasons behind heart disease. It is very important for a person to be stress free to prevent himself from heart diseases as well as for his general well being. If a person is cheerful by nature then he could be able to manage stress in a proper manner.

Laughter and cheerfulness helps in improving the blood flow of our body. When a laughs, the blood vessels of his body start performing better. Laughter also ensures that our body receives oxygenated blood and this improves the strength of the blood as well. If you are suffering from heart diseases, it would be really good for your health that you develop a cheerful attitude towards life. Those who are not suffering can also be cheerful to prevent themselves from heart disease! If you are not cheerful by nature, you can use some external sources to bring laughter, humor and joviality in your life.

Substance and drug abuse has always been a case of concern for the people. The recent researches and studies have shown that substance abuse and drug addiction is increasing at an alarming rate. Large sections of the people are not able to cope up with the mounting pressure and are resorting to abuses and addictions. It is mostly the young people who are losing their focus and putting their footsteps in the wrong path.

The teenagers and the young adults are the ones who are more prone in getting addicted. As they start growing up they are opened to the big bad world. At times it becomes difficult for them to understand between right and wrong. Everything that is considered bad actually seems attractive to them and they are gradually drawn towards them. The first line of control lies with the parents. It is important for the parents to understand the mentality of those young children and provide them proper guidance.

In certain circumstances it is seen that even if the parents try to instill good things in the minds of the children, still they are not able to control the children from going ashtray. If your child becomes an addict, your responsibility in helping him quit that increases manifold. Constant help and supervision from your side is required to help your child come back to normalcy. The various methods of treatment provided in the rehabilitation centers are also necessary in that context. During the rehabilitation process, most of the addicts suffer from withdrawal symptoms. Proper care and attention from the rehab as well as from you is required during such times in order to encourage and elevate the mind of your child.

This is one of the most common terns that we have been hearing since childhood days. Whenever we asked our parents that why we must wear sweaters they have always mentioned that prevention is better than cure. Curing a disease in today’s date is however very easy. But it is important to understand the need to prevention measures. All these measures are intended to stop diseases and other disease causing pathogens harming your body.

There are several pathogens that aim to enter our body disrupt our bodily functions. It is important for us to stop them from entering and adopting preventive measures. We must not undermine the importance of preventive measures. These preventive measures are meant to improve your system’s resistance. This resistance is very much important to keep all kinds of diseases away. Many of us have this conception that prevention can only keep away small diseases. But this only proves to wrong. Several diseases like HIV can be kept away using preventive methods.

Preventive methods are really effective in preventing serious diseases and ailments. One can easily avoid diseases like malaria and dengue by preventing the mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are a problem is several tropical areas like Asia and Africa. People residing here can easily make use of mosquito nets and certain sprays. There are also certain mosquito coils that are effective in keeping mosquitoes away. Using mosquito repellent creams are also a great idea. Using these simple but effective techniques you will be able to ward off these serious diseases.

Parents should understand the importance of prevention for their children. If your children are really young, you need to adopt certain effective ways to save them from diseases. Children are susceptible to every kind of infection. Protecting them from simple infections like cold and cough is very important. Children have extremely sensitive skin.

With such a reduced incidence of the childhood diseases which we vaccinate for, the question naturally rises, should we still bother having our children vaccinated for these diseases? That’s a valid question, and one each couple needs to decide for their own family. Let’s take a minute to look at a few facts.

Vaccines are created for diseases which are caused by viruses. Essentially, they are less virulent versions of those viruses, which stimulate the individual’s immune system to create antibodies that attack that specific virus. If the individual is later exposed to the full-strength version of that virus, the body is already for it and can attack it, protecting itself from disease.

“Okay,” you might say, “but aren’t there medicines which can attack those viruses for us?” Good question. Do you have any idea how effective medical science has been in creating medicines which work against viruses? There are exactly zero medicines on the market which are effective against viruses. All the medical community can do, if someone catches a virus, is give what is known as “supportive care” while the body works to defeat the virus on its own.

That’s why we need to vaccinate our children against these diseases; because medical science has no other solution to help us defeat them. The ones we vaccinate against are capable of causing permanent damage, crippling the individual, or otherwise causing them lifelong problems. By allowing our children to be vaccinated, we are eliminating the risk for their lives to be destroyed by these diseases.

If you don’t vaccinate your children, you are gambling with their lives, their health and their happiness. Those are some pretty big gambling chips. Are you sure you want to gamble with them?

Have you ever heard the one about, “The bigger they are, the harder they fall”? I’m sure you have. Well, based upon that, I guess it’s a good thing that our children are small. After all, kids tend to fall a lot; so, it’s a good thing they don’t have very far to fall.

Cuts and scrapes are part of childhood. Kids are still learning the necessary motor skills to make their bodies do everything they want them to. They’re also learning the necessary judgment, about what can and what can’t hurt them. While most adults will avoid doing something dangerous, because we know it’s dangerous, kids don’t always have that appreciation of danger. That’s okay, that’s why they have parents, to protect them from and teach them about the truly dangerous things in life.

So, if cuts and scrapes are a regular part of a child’s life, it would behoove us as parents to be ready to treat those minor injuries. There’s no sense sitting around the waiting room at the doctor’s, or even worse, sitting in the waiting room at our local hospital’s emergency room, for something we can take care of at home.

Generally speaking, you can gauge the seriousness of a child’s injury by how much they cry. While there are some children who will cry for anything, they’ll still cry harder and longer for something serious than they will for a minor scrape. If they can manage to walk home, you can be sure they didn’t break their leg. More importantly, if you can distract them from the pain with something as simple as a piece of candy, you know that there’s nothing so serious that you need to rush to the emergency room.

Yes, they will get hurt, they might even get hurt seriously; but children have a remarkable capacity to heal. Before you know it, they’ll be playing again.

While vaccines for the major childhood diseases have been around for decades, there are still those who can’t be vaccinated. A fair number of people are allergic to the vaccines that modern medical science uses. Actually, it’s not so much that they are allergic to the vaccines themselves, as they are to the liquid that carries the vaccine.

Just as any other allergy, the reaction to these vaccines can range from mild to very serious. You never know in advance who has these sorts of allergies, although there is a genetic inheritance factor in this. In other words, if a parent is allergic to vaccines, there’s about a 25% chance that they’ll have a child who is also allergic. Or, if that couple has four children, one of them will most likely have that allergy.

For people who have these allergies, being vaccinated can be more dangerous than not being vaccinated. So, for those who are allergic, the decision is based upon which is the greatest risk. While the diseases which we vaccinate our children for are serious, the incident of their occurrence in western society is rare. Granted, part of this is due to the vaccines, but another part is that modern medicine and hygiene have largely eliminated these pathogens from our environment.

This isn’t necessarily true in other countries, however. So, if your family travels outside the United States a lot, the risk factors can change drastically. In some cases, it can change so much that the risk of taking the vaccine may be justified, even with a child who has previously shown allergic tendencies to vaccinations.

If you, your spouse, or any of your children have had any symptoms of allergic reactions to any vaccines in the past, be sure to tell your physician. Each and every time that it is time to administer vaccines, make sure they are aware of this history of allergy; that way, an informed decision can be made by you and the doctor about whether to proceed with the vaccination.

Have you ever heard the joke, “Why do babies wear sweaters?” The answer is, “Because their mommies are cold.” While many will laugh at that answer, there is some strong element of truth to it. Most of the time, we dress our children for our comfort, not for theirs. It is possible that they aren’t cold when we are.

Each person’s metabolism is different, and that affects how easily we get cold. If someone has a slow metabolism, they tend to get cold easily; but if they have a fast metabolism, they don’t tend to get cold easily. Here’s the kicker; most children have higher or faster metabolisms than adults do. As we get older, or metabolism slows down, and we get cold easier. Not only that, but children outside playing don’t know how to walk, they only know how to run; or at least, that’s the way it seems sometimes.

So, if we dress our children to make ourselves comfortable, than we might actually be overdressing them. If they are playing outside in the cold, all bundled up, they could actually be sweating, at the same time that we, as adults are shivering. Sounds okay, right? Wrong! Sweating in the cold can lead to them actually getting colder than if they were wearing lighter clothing. If the sweat freezes on their skin, it can really cause problems.

It is important to be sure that the way our children are dressed when they go out in the cold is adequate for their needs, not for ours. Put your hand inside their clothing from time to time, to make sure they aren’t getting too hot. Have extra layers to put on them if they need it, but also have them dressed in layers, so that something can be taken off if necessary.

In the long run, it’s better for our children to be just a touch cool, than to be overly hot. It might be a little harder to judge that, but with a little practice, you’ll know what they need for whatever activity they are going to do.

Homes today are filled with many poisons that can be harmful to our children, especially small children. That stage where babies put everything in their mouths just doesn’t seem to pass quick enough. Even later, when they stop putting things in their mouths, children can still be harmed by household chemicals.

The only way to protect your children from these dangers is to make sure that they can’t get their hands on them. That means you need to keep all cleaning supplies and chemicals locked away where they are safe from little fingers. Most people put them under the sink and put a child safety lock on the cabinet door.

But wait; there are other things which many people forget to put in that locked cabinet under the sink, which are just as dangerous to our children. Things like medicines. How many prescription and over-the-counter medicines do you have in your home? Are they locked away, or just in the medicine cabinet? For most of us, we just leave that stuff in the medicine cabinet and don’t think about our children getting into it. Some of those medicines can be deadly, especially in strong dosages.

Children don’t know which ones are dangerous and which ones aren’t. Since most children’s medicines and vitamins are made to taste like candy, they can easily get the idea that they are candy and go looking for them. What they encounter may not be what they’re looking for, it might be even worse.

One other area that can be truly dangerous is the garage. How many chemicals do you have in your garage that can be dangerous to children? Paint thinner, poisons for bugs in the garden, adhesives, spray paint, and many other things which we don’t think of, can be a real problem in the hands of our children. Those too need to be locked up, out of reach and out of sight.

Take a walk though your home, look in all the hidden places, what’s there that can be dangerous. More importantly, what can you do about it?

Every home that has children is bound to have people getting hurt. It seems that kids attract injuries, or maybe just that kids don’t think about the risks of their actions, and so are more likely to get injured. On top of that, it seems that every family has one child who wants to be the next Evil Knievel. They’re the one who is always trying something daring, thinking that the laws of physics don’t apply to them, and accepting every dare. They’re also the one who gets hurt the most.

When that inevitable injury occurs, no matter how small, super-mom has to instantly change into doctor mom. The question is, are you ready? Is your emergency room fully stocked for whatever boo-boo your kids manage to get? Or, if not your emergency room, how about your first-aid-kit, is it ready?

What do you need to have in your first-aid-kit in order to be ready for those sudden emergencies? Let’s take a look:

Adhesive Bandages – be sure to have an assortment of sizes, and some larger sizes as well. Not all boo-boos can be covered by a little strip. Although more expensive, the flexible bandages last longer.

Alcohol or Hydrogen Peroxide – for cleaning the wound before bandaging it.

Cotton balls or pads – for cleaning the wound and applying disinfectant; you don’t want to use your fingers for this.

Antibiotic Ointment – you need something to put on that cut or scrape, in order to make sure it doesn’t get infected.

Rubber or Plastic Gloves – you may decide to treat your own children’s cuts and scrapes without using gloves, but what about their friends? This is a good item for your safety and protection.

Children’s Pain Reliever – always a good idea; be sure to know the proper dosages.

Muscle Cream – aching muscles happen too; it’s a good idea to have something for them.

Last but not least – a good supply of lollipops. That’s the best medicine for a crying child.

Now you’re ready for action, bring on the injuries, doctor mom is on duty.

In case of emergency dial 911.What if there is not an emergency, but kisses will not do the trick? You would turn to your trusty first aid kit. The same kit that you have not looked at in months, and to be honest, cannot really remember if there is even a band-aid in it. If this is you, then it is a good thing you decided to read on. Having a first-aid kit in your home can be really beneficial, and when you have those little emergencies, that kit can bring about a lot of piece of mind. You are also in luck, today’s kits are intended to be light weight, and very portable, which means that you do not have to worry about lugging around a huge amount of products for the sake of piece of mind.

First on the list of what you should have in your kit is none other than antiseptic wash. If you bandage something without cleaning it first, you will be sealing in bacteria, and other infectious causing particles. The best type is an extremely inexpensive saline wash that is small and costs about $.60. Once you have cleaned that scrape or wound you will be ready to bandage. This means band-aids, or bandages. For this you should consider purchasing bandages that are second skin sealant. This means that after you wash the affected area, you can bandage, and nothing is getting between the bandage because of the seal that it provides. If the wound is deep enough, consider using some type of antibiotic topical treatment. This would be like Neosporin, or even a generic. Next would be gauge, then tape, and a pair of small scissors. If you are unsure about what a kit should contain, or how to use all the products in the kit, you can always visit your local Red Cross, and they will explain what you need to know.

There are so many over the counter drugs these days that are intended to help one ailment or another, but really, nature has already provided the answer. The help aid comes in the form of a recipe, or an herb, and the answers to many common health issues for children can be found in your own backyard depending on where you live. For instance, if your child has chronic colds, and you live in the desert, look into fresh creosote. Creosote, which can also be found in many health food stores, is a great natural decongestant and expectorant. The beneficial part of using homeopathic medications is there they are much safer to use, and are intended to be used by children.

Another great gift from nature is garlic. Garlic is one of nature’s greatest antibiotics. This means sinus infections, ear infections, or any other type of illness that would normally require prescribed antibiotics, can be cut off at the pass. By having garlic as part of your regular diet, or with garlic pills, you and your children can avoid many of the bacterial illnesses that can ruin a good day.

Are you feeling ginger today? Ginger root is nature’s pain killer. Mix some ginger root, garlic, and some cinnamon, nature’s other antibiotic, into a nice tea, and your cold, sinus pain, or tonsil pain are gone in a flash. Mix with some honey, and now your natural cure is great tasting too. Since honey is completely sterile, and sugar free, you do not have to worry about it bringing your immune system down. Many people do not realize that sugar can actually help make you sicker because it brings down the effectiveness of your body’s natural defenses. Stick with all natural remedies, and you will feel a big difference in the way your body responds, and to way it is able to naturally protect itself from illnesses.

Having a healthy diet is one of the best things that a parent can do for their child. A healthy diet consists of food that will help your child grow into a strong adult. By providing good nutrition now, your child could look forward to having a long life without many of the health concerns that many people today face. Some of the major health concerns today revolve around weight, and childhood obesity. This is a scary epidemic in today’s world because so many of our children are overweight. With fast food, and convenience foods being so ever-present, it is easy to see why our children are struggling with this trend.

One of the best things that you can do right away for your child is to give him or her, a variety of foods. This will help to control the pickiness that some children have. Statistically speaking, picky eaters tend to have more issues with their weight. This is part related to the fact that picky eaters tend to be picky about healthy foods. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables is a key way of keeping your children healthy. If you do not like those types of foods, pretend that you do, because your child will mimic what you do and eat. If you claim that you do not like something, your child will soon claim the same without ever trying the food in discussion.

The other thing that you can do is to change up foods that you know your child likes, and start integrating healthy options. For instance, if your child likes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, consider using low sugar jelly, low fat peanut butter, and multi-grain bread. This will cut down on the calories and fat, provide more fiber in their diet, and you can have the comfort of knowing that you were able to provide a healthy snack.

To a child, a mother’s kiss is healing magic. To a mother, it is a simple way of loving your child. In reality, when something has happened to your child, this is a good time to teach them lessons on safety. Children are very impressionable, and using a coddling moment to help them learn something valuable is priceless.

There is a unique bond that mothers and children share. For some reason, children crave their mothers love and affection, even to the point of faking an injury to receive healing kisses. Use the incident to teach them that falling on purpose, or running in the house could be unsafe. Then give them hugs and tell them to play safer in the house. This is important for a couple of reasons. First, when a child is intentionally harming themselves to get attention, it is only a matter of time before a serious injury could occur. Second, encouraging them to come to you after an injury only encourages the child to continue with the behavior. By giving them a brief lesson in safety, you are telling your child that they have to be more concerned for themselves. There is a point when coming to mom for every type of incident has to wane. This is a necessary step, and difficult for moms, because by encouraging the child to come to you, you are saying that the behavior and the causes that lead to the reasons for behavior are acceptable.

Here is food for thought, a child will behave the way he or she is trained to behave. If there is not training to curb a behavior, then essentially the current behavior is being trained to remain intact. It is better to teach your children to be safe, than literally sorry later on with a more serious injury.

One of the biggest fears of parents is that there child will get into a cleaner, or medication, and hurt themselves with it. This could come about by either ingesting a toxic material, or by getting something harmful into their eyes. Regardless of how they could get hurt, it is always wise to be trained in preventing poisonous interactions, as well as what to do when something poisonous has caused harm to your child.

Some experts say that by having your child drink lots of milk right away that that is the best way to slow down anything from getting into the system, or by having your child drink lots and lots of water, because that will do the same thing. In reality, there is one thing you should do first, call poison control. They can guide you, based on the product that your child has come into contact with, on how to handle the issue. This could be a life or death situation, so it is good to have their number in an easy to find place in your home. This is also important if you have a babysitter, and he or she runs into an issue with harmful chemicals.

When you call poison control, it is best to do exactly what they say. Meaning, if they say, “hang-up, and dial 911, or go to ER right away,” it is in your best interest to do so. However, many cases of poison control issues are easily solved at home without the need for medical attention. This is because there are things that you have at home that can counteract the affects of many hazardous materials. Remember, that luck favors the prepared. Make sure that you never have to call poison control by being responsible about keeping your children away from harmful products.

Setting rules in the house, or while the children play outside is truly for their own protection. You have a rule that they not run in the street. This is by design, you do not want to see your child hit by a car. Many children get frustrated by rules, especially when they are little because they simply do not understand the consequences of certain actions. This is very true of children that see things on television and since the characters do not seem to get hurt, then why should they? It is a frustrating thing for many parents because they do not want to tell their children “no.” However, it is in your child’s best interest to do the one thing that is difficult.

Protecting your children from harmful things like poisons, cars, or even bugs is a daunting task. Whether you want to admit it or not, your house is full of poisonous things that can cause serious harm to your child if they were to ingest or play with them. Cleaners are the number one accidental overdose among children under the age of seven. Teaching them how to behave around cleaners, and establishing rules, is really for their own good. Establishing rules will also help them learn that there are certain universals in our world. For instance, if you are not to be playing with cleaners in one house, chances are, you are not to be playing with cleaners in someone else’s home either. By teaching them these lessons at an early age, they will be able to grasp rules when they attend school or a birthday party. This will also help them learn how to take direction as well, and those are ideas and concepts that will help them later on in life, not just as a protective measure now.

Many children suffer from food allergies and many of the types of allergies that children have are very serious. For instance, a peanut allergy is a progressive allergy. This means that the allergic response gets worse with every occurrence. For example, if the first allergic response involves a hard time breathing, hives, or discoloration of the skin, the second and third responses will have the same type of events, but just at an increasingly stronger magnitude. Especially with peanut allergies, the affects of the allergic response can be get to the point that touching a peanut can cause a sever reaction.

Another intense food allergy is with shellfish. Many children that have this allergy usually react with anaphylactic shock. This is the where the body can not fight off the histamine in the fish, and begins to swell. The areas that have touched the fish are the areas that begin to swell. This means that the throat, mouth, tongue, and lips swell. With anaphylactic shock, the swelling can begin immediately, and unless there is immediate intervention, can be extremely harmful. This allergy is much like a peanut allergy, in that is can worsen with each event. However, this allergy does not worsen with the same speed like that of a peanut allergy. Peanut allergies can take only two or three events to become at is fullest reactionary stage. With shellfish, this can take years.

All food allergies are serious, and should be taken very seriously by those that are around, and care for your child. It is recommended that a bracelet be worn by your child, identifying the allergies that are present. It is also imperative that you notify their schools about the condition, so that your child can remain protected. This includes not allowing certain snacks or foods in the classroom by other students, and separating your child from others at lunch to make sure every precaution is taken.

Children get sick, that is common knowledge. Do you know exactly how that happens, or what it takes to get certain illnesses? Well, many of the ways that viruses and bacteria are spread is through direct contact with the illness. This means that if a child wipes their hands on their face, and they have a cold, then touch a door knob, then the next person that touches that door knob is coming in direct contact with that cold. The way that it is given to people is through a couple of different ways. First is air born. Someone coughs, and then other inhale the sickness. The next is when someone touches an infected surface, then touches their eyes, licks their fingers, or touch foods that they are going to eat. This gets the illness inside of the body.

One of the dirtiest illnesses to get is diarrhea. This illness is spread fecal to oral. Which means if someone uses the restroom, and does not wash their hands, then interacts with another person, that other person is potentially affected. So, if that other person touches their face, or foods that they are eating, they can get the diharrea bug that was passed on by another infected person.

The best way to counteract getting sick, especially with children, is by encouraging good hand washing. If the illness is bad, encourage using anti-microbial soap. This will kill any diseases or harmful bacteria that can cause you and your children to get sick. Especially with the oral-fecal illnesses. Those include stomach bugs, diarrhea, nausea, constipation, and even bouts of food poisoning. It is best, when caring for someone that has any of these illnesses, to carry around a bottle of wash free hand soap. This will make sterilizing easier to manage, and hopefully keep you and yours healthier.

Burns are a common event. Whether they are sun burns, slight heat burns, from say a light bulb, or sever burns from fire. Most can be handled at home with basic first aid. The point of handling a burn at home with first aid to try and prevent the burn from spreading. When skin burns, the cells transport the heat, thus allowing the burn to essentially spread and damage surrounding cells. By providing first aid right away, the continuation of that cycle declines significantly, eliminating more possible injury.

There are some basic steps to take when handling a burn. There are also some serious “don’t's” when handling a burn as well. For instance, you never want to place ice directly onto the site of the injury. Hypothermia is the burning of skin cells through freezing. Burning essentially means destruction of the cell. By placing ice directly on the burn site, you are continuing the damage, just with the opposite element. Cool water is best. Run cool water over the site, as soon as humanly possible. Quick action can be the difference between blisters and weeks of discomfort. Another fast acting help aid is aloe vera.

Some people have a plant in their home for burns, and this plant help soothe sun burns and second degree burns. While it is not the most aesthetically pleasing plant to look at, it is very hardy, can handle being mistreated; so if you don’thave a green thumb, you do not need to worry. When your child, or someone in your home receives a burn, just break off a piece of the plant, and rub the sticky juice inside all over the burn. The aloe has a cooling affect, strong moisturizers, and a pain killing element. This is why so many skin care products have aloe vera as a main ingredient. By having the plant in your home, you will have an extreme concentration ready when you need it.

The prevention of burns in the home is an easy process, and one that should be taken seriously. In fact, many accidents in the home are related to burns, and many times could have been absolutely prevented. The key to avoiding such accidents, especially with children in the home, is to educate your child on the seriousness of playing with fire, electrical socket safety, and why it is important to turn off light and appliances when leaving a room. The other topic of safety, which is directed to small children, is kitchen safety, more specifically, stove safety.

When teaching children about safety around the house, it might be wise to allow your child to experience a slight sensation of heat, or to see what can happen if the worst were to occur. This will give your child a respect for the household hazards. This is also a good time to tell them what to do if something were to happen. The reason this step is so important is because many children can develop a fear of the certain things, and you would not want your child to be afraid while in their own home.

The second caution that you can do is to make sure that you are using good safety precautions. Have fire extinguisher readily available in the home, make sure the batteries in fire detectors are all up to date, as well as simple things like having the handles for cooking pots facing away from the open room. Another is candle safely. Many children like to play with the candles while they are burning, and this is something that can cause burns, and is unnecessary. Place candles on shelves or stable ledges that can not be reached or knocked over. This will help ensure that a child can not get close enough to the flame to receive a burn.

Children are always going to have little ailments that come along during their lifeteimes. The common is the sniffles, colds, tummy aches, and ear aches. These are very normal things to deal with, but it is a parents role to figure out if these ailments are symptomatic of a more serious condition. For instance, if your child has the sniffles, the mucus is clear, there is no fever, but your child is very tired, chances are it is just allergies. This is a quick fix with antihistamines, or with treatment with herbal remedies such as teas or homeopathic drops. The key factor is fever. If fever is not present, then the best thing to do for your child is to help keep their sinuses clear, allow them to rest, and pamper them for a little while. Pampering goes a long way to helping your child feel like they feel better.

Ear aches are another common occurrance. In fact, many ear aches come after the sniffles have developed. There are couple of causes for ear aches, and one of them is that mucus is backing up in the sinuses

When children are growing, they need a healthy variety of foods, in order to have the best possible health that a parent can provide. This goes beyond vitamins and minerals, but includes a hard look at fats, sugars, and sodium that a child takes in at every meal. Providing child with optimal foods can prepare their bodies for a long and healthy life for many years to come. What many people do not realize, is that fat cell development, circulatory development, and internal functions are changing and forming until a child has finished growing. This means that whatever a child has set while still growing, is what they will have for their lifetime. For instance, if a child has a weight issue as a child, their body has developed more fat, and they will have that additional cell development the rest of their lives.

As parents, we can shape our children to be healthy, active, and fit, so that they can carry on those attributes as they age. Encourage your children to exercise by playing outside. We live in a society where children stay indoors, playing video games, and they do not exercise, through play, outdoors anymore. This has led to an increase in childhood obesity, and other childhood health issues related to poor diet and lack of exercise. The other thing that you can do is encourage your children to complete chores in the home, but make it fun, by making it a race. The serves two purposes, it helps you with housework, and it gets your child moving. It has been shown that housework, vacuuming, sweeping, cleaning mirrors, can burn up to 300 calories an hour. Make exercise a family affair. By including yourself in the exercise that you are asking of your children, this shows them the importance of what you are asking, as well as create a bonding moment.

Vaccinations are vital for your child’s health. There are many childhood diseases thought to nearly disappeared because of important vaccinations. Some of the primary ones that children receive are for measles, mumps, and rubella. These diseases are sometimes fatal, but usually their lasting affects later in life are the true end result. Measles, for instance, can be miserable for a child to endure, but depending on the severity, can cause sterility. Mumps can cause problems with hearing, and sterility. Rubella can cause most harm to pregnant women, who contract the disease from infected children. The disease can lead to late term miscarriage.

These are only a handful of the diseases that children are vaccinated for, and because there is a blanket approach to vaccinating young children, many of these diseases are nearly extinct in the United States. However, there are those that are afraid to have their children vaccinated. There was a case report where a doctor misrepresented his finding for a completely unrelated phenomenon to the use of vaccinations. Since that report was released, many of these diseases are making their way back into our children’s lives. The doctors research was clarified, and it was found to produce false results. The outcome of this was that millions of children are susceptible to diseases that up until a decade ago, were thought to be eliminated in western culture.

Vaccinations are an important step in ensuring that our children are able to have happy, productive lives, without the threat of long term affects from a preventable disease. By taking care of your children, it protects countless others around them, including family and friends. Counties have health departments that offer free vaccinations once a month. Contact your local Health Department if you are interested in learning more about the offerings and education on available vaccinations.

Many children deal with allergies, whether it is seasonal or year-round. There are things that you can do that can alleviate some of the culprits of seasonal allergies. For instance, many homes in the summer have swamp coolers, also known as water coolers, or vented window units depending on your area. These machines hold dust, mold, mites, and pump the room they are in with allergy causing air particles. The best way to curb this is by making sure there are clean filters in the units, and that they have been kept in a clean place, or winterized with as much seal as possible.

During the winter, many allergies pop-up because the house becomes a petri dish of allergens. How do you handle this? Open the windows a few times, and air out the house. Disenfect handles, door knobs, the bathroom, and other areas where there is a lot of touching, and maybe not enough washing. This will help. The other consideration that you could make during this time of year, is by replacing your child’s pillows. Pillows and matresses hold epithelials. These are skin cells that sluff off during the night. These cells accumulate, and actually hold onto viruses, and cause allergy related issues. This is especially important since your child can be inhaling these old dirty cells in their sleep because of close contact. Having a matress cover can also significantly cut down on the amount of allergens that a mattress can hold.

During the Spring and Summer, make sure your children bath at least once a day, and preferably before bedtime. Many allergens from this time of year include pollen, and other naturally sticky materials. When your child bathes they are washing off those sneeze causing pollens. This will also prevent the pollen from making its way to your childs bed, where it can stay, causing allergies to worsen.

Many injuries for children are caused by things that can be prevented. In fact, many accidents in the home could be prevented with very inexpensive products. For instance, door locks for cupboards can prevent children from getting into cleaners and medications. Children are curious, and not all child protective seals keep children from getting into pill bottles, or other products that could seriously harm your child. These locks can be the basic plastic zip tie type, or they can be a magnetic release. Both of which range from $1-$5 dollars. This type of product is especially important if your child has an allergy, and needs to be kept from specifics types of foods that you may have in your home. This would include things like Peanut Butter, or Gluten containing foods.

Another safety precaution that can be made in the home is with covering things that are sharp, or has sharp corners. Many moms want to protect their children from this type of accident, but how is this done without hurting the aesthetics of your home? Simple, there are clear corner protectors that come in a matte or clear finish. The covers fit around slim corners, like that of coffee table, and around thick corners, like what you would see with a stone fireplace.

Finally, another protective product that can help moms is the ever popular safety gate. This keeps small children out of rooms, or spaces that can contain harmful items. This is especially true if there is a room that has a lot glass, or has objects that are sharp, low to the ground, or can fall of shelves that are not secured to a wall. Many accidents in the home are caused by little ones that are maneuvering around the house, bump into something, and it either causes an injury, or something falls and has the same result.

How many times have you seen a child outside in the winter, wearing only shorts a t-shirt, and thought, “If I were their mother…”? Many parents respond with, “They just insisted on wearing that.” As a parent it is our job to make sure that our children are protected. Protecting them from the flu or colds, it just as important of a job. So how do you go about doing that, without making your children feel like you are taking over? Simple, this requires some imagination, creativity, and the old habit of layering. Imagination because you might have to con your kids into going along with the plan. Creativity because you going to have to find clothing they like, and layering because then you can compromise on the clothing. Compromising on clothing means that your child can pick what they want to wear out, and you pick what they have to wear over their choice. What this does for your child is give them freedom, while you are trying to prevent illness. Once your child is indoors, they can take off the heavy layers, revealing their choice for an outfit.

Winter is not the only season to take into account. The Summer is just as important, because you have to protect your children from the suns cancer causing rays. There are certain fabrics that allow the suns harmful rays to penetrate, and a child can sustain a burn while being fully clothed. These fabrics include large weaves, or fabrics with small holes. Many jerseys, inexpensive prints, and lighter cottons do allow the suns cancer causing rays to reach your child’s skin. During the summer months, it is best to also wear light colored clothing, as this reflects the sun rays, and make your child cooler in temperature. Wearing darker clothing can make your body warmer than necessary.

Keeping kids safe involves developing a healthy and nurturing relationship between parents and children. This type of relationship requires a great deal of effort and work but the long term results in providing a safe environment for children are most rewarding.
There are many ways that such a nurturing relationship can be developed. One way is to make sure that children know they are loved even when they might do something wrong. Another is to encourage children by praising their achievements and accomplishments and recognizing their skills as they develop them. Parents also need to spend time with their children and plan activities that can be enjoyed together. When it comes to discipline, parents should not be physical with their children. There are many alternatives to physical discipline such as offering choices, redirecting the child’s attention or simply using a “time out”.
There are also many ways in which to make sure that children are well cared for and consequently can be kept safe. One way is to insure that the foods they eat are nutritious. Planning regular mealtimes that the entire family can enjoy helps to make sure that children are getting the right nutrition at the right time.
Keeping kids safe also requires that they receive good and regular medical attention. Even though care of children begins before they are born, after they are born, it is important to take them to see the doctor on a regular basis so that he or she can monitor their development and give them their required vaccinations against certain diseases.
Watching over children is also important. Infants should always be within sight of their parents unless they are in a crib or other place of safety. Once children begin to crawl, the house should be made childproof so that children will not hurt themselves. The selection of caregivers should also require special attention so that children will be safe in the absence of parents.

Allergies in children are also a concern for parents. These allergies can be seasonal and occur during a certain time of the year or can be triggered by something indoors such as mold, pet dander, dust mites or certain types of foods, such as nuts.
Seasonal allergies are caused by the small, light, dry pollen granules that are manufactured from trees, grasses and weeds and made to be transported by the wind. Allergic reactions in children to the pollen include a stuffy and runny nose with a clear discharge, sneezing, a nose that itches and red eyes with itching and tearing. Symptoms may worsen if not treated and children may develop a sore throat, headache and coughing. Sometimes parents confuse these symptoms with having a cold or sinus infection as they are unaware that allergic reactions can develop this way. One way to tell if a child has an allergy or something worse is to notice if there are dark circles under the eyes, which are known as allergic shiners or a crease near the bottom of their nose, resulting from rubbing their nose too much.
Allergies in children can be treated with over-the-counter medications but parents should avoid those that can make your child sleepy. Claritin or Alavert are two such over-the-counter medications that do not cause drowsiness in children. Older children can also handle prescription allergy medications such as Allegra, Clarinex and Zyrtec.
Treatments for younger children are somewhat more limited. Clarinex and Zyrtec are available in a liquid form for children over six months of age as is Claritin but it is approved only for children over the age of two years. Another medication is Singulair which treats seasonal and year-round allergies. Children over the age of six months can take in the form or oral granules and as a chewable tablet for children over the age of four.

To keep your kids safe yet allow them to enjoy winter activities like sledding, skating and the occasional snowball fight, you need to pay a little extra attention to their clothes. Your child’s winter clothing should keep them warm, yet not be so heavy and restrictive that they’ll be tempted to shed layers as they move around.

Cotton is not the best choice for winter weather. It tends to soak up sweat quickly (think towels) and once cotton is wet it loses all value as an insulator. Wool or polyester is a much better bet during cold weather.

In extreme cold, start with a set of thermal underwear – tight but not too tight. Top that off with a wool sweater and fleece pants. Then add a water-resistant layer on top to keep your children warm and dry.

Much of a child’s body heat is lost from the top of his head and from his feet. Thus, a warm cap (again, preferably wool) and wool socks under sturdy waterproof boots are ideal. If the cap doesn’t cover your child’s ears, outfit them with earmuffs or ear warmers as well.

Teach Your Children Safe Winter Behavior

Your kids should be on the lookout for the early symptoms of frostbite: numbness and tingling in their hands, feet and face. Teach them to stomp their feet, wiggle fingers and toes, and rub nose and cheeks at the first sign of trouble. If this doesn’t get rid of the numbness your child should go inside immediately and warm up.

On a very cold day, particularly if it’s windy out, exposed bits of skin can develop frostbite with shocking speed. Have your children watch for yellow-gray patches on their skin, and if these appear, they should immediately go inside and summon an adult. If this happens, cover the patch with warm (98-105 degree) water until the skin thaws, then contact your doctor.

When your child has an allergic reaction to something, the first step is figuring out what caused the reaction so that you can keep it from happening again. Different types of allergies have different symptoms, so by analyzing these symptoms you can narrow down the cause.

Hay fever is one of the most common allergies. It’s caused by a reaction to certain plant pollens and is characterized by runny nose, sneezing, and red itchy eyes. More severe reactions can include hives (red itchy bumps or welts on the skin) and dark circles under the eyes, called allergic shiners.

Other respiratory allergies that cause similar symptoms are allergies to pet dander, dust mites, or mold. Typically hay fever is seasonal in nature, getting better or worse as the weather changes, while indoor allergies are constant year-round.

If your child has an itchy red rash but no other allergy symptoms, and the rash remains over several days or develops blisters, it’s caused by a reaction to a poison plant – most commonly poison ivy, poison oak or poison sumac. All of these plants contain a chemical called urushiol that causes an allergic reaction when it touches the skin.

A respiratory-type reaction combined with swelling around the mouth, vomiting and/or diarrhea is probably a food allergy. Common causes of food allergy are nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, and certain types of fish or shellfish

Narrowing Down the Cause

Hay fever occurring in the spring is usually caused by tree pollen; summer hay fever is caused by grass; and autumn hay fever is caused by ragweed or sometimes fungus spores. Indoor allergies can be tough to diagnose and are best dealt with as a group; talk to your doctor about how to reduce indoor allergens. To identify a food allergy you may need to ask your doctor to do blood tests or scratch tests on your child.

For years, people have doubted the safety of child vaccinations. Some claim they do more harm than good, such as causing other illnesses like Autism. But, the fact is that children of today are a lot healthier than their parents and grandparents before them. And that is because of the invention of vaccinations that protect children and adults from serious diseases.

Many contagious and deadly diseases are now extinct, thanks to childhood vaccinations. Kids no longer contract Polio or Small Pox. Whooping Cough is so rare in children, except when contracted by their un-vaccinated parents or through non-vaccinated children in school or daycare. These are just a few of the illnesses of times gone by that are no longer a threat to the livelihood of kids today.

When you vaccinate your child, you are stopping the progress of disease. If you do not vaccinate your children, then you are not only providing a host for a malicious disease to live, but you are endangering the lives of others. It also gives the disease a chance to possibly evolve and become immune to the vaccination.

On top of the medical benefits of stopping terrible illnesses from once again infecting thousands, when you vaccinate your child you are sparing them the misery of being ill. You may also be sparing their life as many of the vaccinations given to children prevent diseases that can cause death.

Many parents agree that a quick prick and a fussy day are well worth it, if it saves their child from days, weeks, or a lifetime of being ill. When a child is protected from a deadly disease by being vaccinated, they are stopping the spread of illness and halting the existence of deadly diseases. When your child is protected from an illness, then your child can not pass the illness on to other children, thus your vaccinated child is also helping to ensure other children are healthy too.

There is nothing more distressful not only to parents but to the entire family than a sick child. Although young children can get the same ailments as adults, there are certain ones that children tend to get more often and include the common cold, fever and disorders of the stomach.
The common cold seems to hit children under the age of six more than any other age range. Viruses cause colds and because there are so many types of the rhino virus, there really is no cure for the common cold. Fever, sore throat and a headache as well as a stuffy nose are the major symptoms of a common cold. The best remedies parents can use are to make sure the child gets enough sleep and to apply a healing compress to the child’s throat as well as to use steam in the child’s room that he or she can inhale. Medications like Tylenol, aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are good for reducing fever, while decongestant drugs can be used to reduce nasal congestion.
When the temperature of the child’s body goes above what is considered normal, it is typically a fever that might be a sign of illness or increased immune following vaccination. A temperature above 100⁰ indicates that the child has a fever. To treat a high temperature, remove excessive clothing from the child, sponge the child down with warm water, have the child drink plenty of fluids and give the child medications like Tylenol, aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to help reduce the fever.
Infections by stomach flu, intestinal virus and poorly prepared foods that can cause infections can trigger stomach disorders in children. The symptoms usually include sever cramping pains in the abdomen, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. The treatments are to feed the child warm liquids and to place a warm moist cloth over the child’s stomach.

Parents want nothing more for their children than to protect them from any kind of illness whether it is the common cold or a disease more serious that could potentially kill a child. No parent would want to see the latter happen and so during the early years of life, children are given a variety of vaccinations to help prevent their getting major common diseases such as the measles, mumps, chicken pox, whooping cough and Haemophilus Influenzae type b (Hib Disease).
Vaccinations are given to young children because the diseases they prevent can hit a child when he or she is young and most vulnerable. Infant and young children are more susceptible to certain diseases than older children. For example, serious complications of whooping cough can occur in infants less than six months of age and more than a majority of infants who get it must be hospitalized. The ages at which vaccinations are recommended to be given are chosen to provide the earliest and best protection against a child getting a disease.
The same germs or parts of them that cause a disease make up a vaccination. However, the difference in the germs in the vaccination is that they have either been killed or are weakened so that illness does not result. Injection is used to introduce these weakened or killed germs into the body. The immune system reacts to this injection in a similar fashion that it would if the disease was actually entering the body by creating anti-bodies. The purpose of the anti-bodies is to destroy the germs from the vaccine in same way as if they were the actual disease germs. They provide immunity by staying in the body and are there for protection if one is ever exposed to the disease. They are there to help a child’s immune system do its work by developing protection against potential future infections.

What a child wears is important to the experiences of a child and can make a difference in the very quality of those experiences. Their health, safety, comfort and well-being can even be affected by what they wear. That is why it is important to dress them properly for the variety of situations they will encounter.
When it comes to temperature, it is important that children are not wearing too many clothes or too little clothes and that their clothing is suitable to the environment. Smaller children are more susceptible to becoming overheated or chilled. It is therefore important, particularly during the change of seasons when the weather can be variable that spare clothes be sent with the child for potential unexpected changes of weather.
As for their feet, the shoes that children wear should be safe and comfortable and fit well. Shoes must not only provide protection but support as well, so that raised heels should be avoided that can cause accidents. Soles that provide some method of gripping make climbing and other physical activities safer for children.
Protection from the sun is also important for children. This can be provided by fabrics that are tightly woven, such as t-shirts, long sleeves and pants as well as hats with soft brims that enable movement while providing maximum protection.
Clothing types and accessories must also be taken into account when dressing children. For example, tripping can be caused by long hems while items such as necklaces, long drawstrings and ribbons can also be of risk to a child. Safety hazards with regard to clothing seem to affect younger children more than older ones and should be taken into account when dressing them.
The best fabrics for children are natural fabrics such as cotton and fabrics that are “scratchy” should be avoided. Having a low fire danger is another characteristic of children’s clothing.

There are many alternatives to physical discipline such as offering choices, redirecting the child’s attention or simply using a “time out’.

In June 2010 a whooping cough epidemic in the Los Angeles area caused the deaths of five babies. All five were under three months of age, meaning that they were too young for the vaccination to fully protect them.

Very young babies are more vulnerable to diseases such as whooping cough, which makes it imperative to protect them from being exposed to these diseases. Since the first round of preventative vaccinations can’t be administered until your baby is six weeks old, and the vaccinations take another two weeks minimum to fully protect your child, young babies are at risk for infection.

What many parents fail to realize is that, while you may have received these vaccinations yourself as a child, these protections wear off over time. Adult boosters exist for many of the childhood vaccinations and they can protection you – and in turn, protect your child – from infection.

Health and safety experts believe that the whooping cough deaths in Los Angeles occurred because the infants’ caretakers were infected with whooping cough without realizing it. Whooping cough can first manifest in adults without the telltale whooping noise, so the adult may think he has nothing worse than a bad cold.

How to Protect Your Baby

The TDaP adult vaccination protects you against tetanus, diptheria and pertussis (aka whooping cough) for up to ten years. Get this and the other adult vaccination boosters ASAP, as they take a couple of weeks to fully protect your system from these infections. Your doctor can provide more specific details.

If you have cold or flu symptoms, take precautions to keep from spreading the infection to your child. Wash your hands regularly and avoid coughing or sneezing in your child’s presence, as these infections are commonly spread through the air. You may even want to wear a surgical mask while in your child’s company to ensure their safety.

No one likes to drag their child to the doctor and watch them cry as they’re stuck with needles. In fact, it can be tempting to put off a vaccination rather that watch your child suffer. But as a parent, you have to remember that these vaccinations are protecting them from much worse suffering.

Young children don’t think ahead. They may never have seen a really sick person and may not understand the concept. So if you try to explain why they’re getting shots, they simply won’t understand the significance.

As an adult, you do understand the significance. Vaccines protect your child against an array of horrible diseases. They are one of the chief reasons why child mortality rates have dropped significantly over the past several decades.

Polio killed more than 3,000 people during the height of the 1952 epidemic. Yet thanks to the polio vaccine invented by Jonas Salk, polio as an infectious disease has been all but eliminated in the USA and other Western nations. Children who have been vaccinated on schedule are fully protected from this and other dread diseases.

It’s vitally important that your children receive their vaccinations as close as possible to the doctor’s schedule. This schedule keeps your kids fully protected.

How to Help Your Kids Through the Process

You should, of course, explain to your children why they’re getting vaccinated. But don’t expect them to understand or accept the process. Many adults are still terrified of getting shots, so your kids are likely to scream and kick and try to talk their way out of their doctor visits.

The most effective approach is loving firmness. Once you’ve explained why they need their shots, make it clear that they will be getting those shots no matter how much of a fuss they make. And offer a reward, like a new toy or an ice cream treat, on the way home from the doctor.

Ageing is an inevitable process. With ageing, humans are forced to face a number of health and mental disorders. Alzheimer is one of such mental disorders that are known to affect people as they grow older. Although, one can see Alzheimer affecting young people as well but the chances of being affected by Alzheimer increase with age. Alzheimer is known to affect women more as compared with men. There are two third of women that are affected by the disease.

When a person gets affected by Alzheimer, his/her metal abilities start to get affected over time. The memory of Alzheimer patients gets affected so badly that if they remember something at one time, they totally forget that thing at another time. Loss of memory at intervals; sometimes for short intervals and sometimes for long intervals has many risks associated with it. The loss of memory does not become a problem only for the patient but becomes an issue and a reason to be concerned about for the direct relatives of the patient. Statistics show that a large number of deaths are attributed to the dementia.

So, if someone in the family is suffering from memory loss diseases like Alzheimer then it becomes mandatory for the family members to be very careful about the activities of that person. Family members should not let the patient go out alone, should keep monitoring the patient when he is in the bath, must not let him use knives etc. Sometimes, the condition of the Alzheimer patients get so worsen that it becomes impossible for the family members to after the patients. At such points, they may decide to leave the patient in the special nursing homes where full care and support is available for the Alzheimer patients.

Food poisoning, as a rule, is very unpleasant but not life-threatening. Most people have suffered food poisoning at some point as represented by the “24-hour flu.”

Botulism is the fatal exception to this rule. The botulism bacteria themselves are not poisonous. But as they grow they produce an incredibly powerful toxin that can kill anywhere from 18 hours to 8 days after consumption. Botulism toxin is so potent that if you touch a finger to it and then touch your finger to your lips, you may get enough to kill you. It’s estimated that 16 ounces (2 cups) of this toxin would be enough to kill everyone on Earth.

Botulism in older children and adults is caused by eating food contaminated by botulism toxin. Since botulism bacteria thrive in airless, low-acid environments, most such cases are a result of insufficiently heated home-canned food or incompletely fermented foods such as homemade pickles or sauerkraut.

Infant botulism is another matter. Since an infant’s digestive tract is not fully developed, botulism bacteria can actually live in a baby’s intestine and produce toxin, which sickens the baby over a period of time. Therefore it’s vital to limit your baby’s exposure to the bacteria. One known cause of botulism infection is honey – the botulism spores are often found in honey, and while they’re no risk to adults, babies under one year of age should not eat raw honey under any circumstances.

Early Warning Signs of Infant Botulism

The first symptom of infant botulism is constipation, followed by loss of appetite or difficulty with feeding, weakness and listlessness. Eventually the infection causes partial or full paralysis.

When treated in a hospital, fewer than 1 percent of infant botulism cases cause the death of the child, but if left untreated, death is almost inevitable. So it’s imperative to get treatment for your baby if they show any of the above symptoms.

Are your children lactose intolerant or allergic to milk? These reactions in children are frequently caused by drinkin pasteurized cow’s milk. Fortunately there is another option out there for your kids!

Milk allergies are caused by the body’s bad reaction to certain proteins in the milk. An allergic child’s immune system mistakes these proteins for dangerous invaders, and goes on high alert to destroy them. This overreaction of the immune system causes the allergy symptoms, which include rashes, itchy nose and eyes, and swelling around the mouth.

Lactose intolerance is an inability to break down the sugar in milk, causing a variety of digestive issues. Symptoms include stomach pains, bloating, nausea and diarrhea, usually starting about 15 minutes to 1 hour after drinking milk.

Raw cow’s milk is less likely to cause allergy problems than pasteurized milk. In its natural state, milk is full of enzymes and friendly bacteria that help us digest the milk by partially breaking it down for us. Remember, milk is designed by the cow as a perfect food for her babies… and it’s packed full of those little helpers to make it easier for her calves to digest.

When the milk is heated for pasteurization, these helpers are killed or deactivated by the cooking process. As a result, your children have to digest what’s left without their help. Many children who suffer from lactose intolerance or milk allergies can safely drink raw milk.

How to Introduce Raw Milk to Your Kids

Since you don’t want to cause your children unnecessary pain, it’s best to start with a very small amount of raw milk and monitor them closely. Most children experience greatly reduced symptoms and many have no symptoms at all when drinking raw milk as opposed to the pasteurized stuff. There is also a taste difference, so it may take a few tries for your kids to adapt to the taste of raw milk.

If your children are lactose intolerant or suffer from mild milk allergies, you should try switching them to raw milk instead of the pasteurized stuff available at the grocery store. Raw milk is far easier for little stomachs to digest, and kids who can’t safely drink pasteurized milk may have no trouble with raw milk.

The draconian health and safety laws governing dairies makes acquiring raw milk difficult. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, dairying in the USA was often conducted under horribly unsanitary conditions. Milk was often so badly contaminated that it was a major factor in infant mortality rates of the time.

The government was faced with two options: require the dairies to clean up their operations, or require them to pasteurize their milk: thus killing the bacteria that flourished in these environments. They chose the latter option. Since that time, cleanliness laws have been passed that also require dairies to have a sanitary working environment, and raw milk is now a safe option. Unfortunately, laws forbidding the sale of raw milk remain in place.

How to Legally Buy Raw Milk

So how can you buy raw milk without breaking the law? Most states have a loophole allowing a person who owns a dairy animal to drink the milk raw himself – he simply can’t sell that milk to anyone else.

So small dairies often sell “cow shares” to consumers who want raw milk. You pay the dairy owner for, say, 1/20th of a cow, and he supplies you with raw milk from that cow. Since you are technically an owner of the cow you can legally get the milk.

To be safe, check on your state and local laws before you pursue this course… and confirm that the dairy is certified Grade A, which means it meets rigorous sanitary standards. Then you’ll know the milk you give to your kids is perfectly healthy!

Kids will eat the strangest things. And few things can match a parent’s horror at seeing their child eat a squirming, LIVE critter.

Fortunately, most bugs are perfectly harmless. It seems disgusting to us, but most cultures at one time or another made bugs part of their regular diet. Ants, grubs, beetles and other insects are generally not harmful to eat. Earthworms are also nonpoisonous.

The brown garden snail, a menace to gardens throughout California, is in fact the same snail known by the French as “escargot.” It was brought to the USA in the mid 19th century, where it escaped captivity and has thrived in California backyards ever since. If your catch your child eating these, perhaps he or she is a budding gourmet!

Despite their relative healthiness, you should definitely discourage bug-eating in your children. While they may not be poisonous, many larger insects such as grasshoppers can carry parasites (bugs in bugs!) and should not be eaten raw. Besides, bug eating is not exactly acceptable in the USA and will cause social problems if allowed to continue.

If, in addition to eating bugs, your child eats things like dirt, soap and other nonfood items, she may have a condition called ‘pica.’ Talk to your pediatrician right away to resolve this issue. It’s possible that your child has a nutritional deficiency that can be fixed by giving her a daily multivitamin.

What To Do On the Spot

If your child eats a bug or other small crawling critter and you see enough to identify it, call your local Poison Control and confirm that it was not a dangerous bug. Your pediatrician can also advise you.

Obviously, you should let your child know that his behavior is unacceptable. Perhaps it’s time for a flat rule – no eating anything that’s not provided by a parent or other responsible adult.

The traditional treatment for the common cold, mustard plasters are great at relieving the symptoms of any respiratory illness. A well-made mustard plaster helps with cold, flu, sinus infections, even allergies. And unlike drugstore decongestants, there’s no need to worry about overdosing your child.

Mix 1 part powdered mustard with 10 parts flour. A good starting amount is ½ teaspoon mustard and 5 teaspoons flour. You can always add more as needed, just keep the proportions the same. Add warm (not hot) water and stir the ingredients until they form a smooth paste. Then spread the paste onto a piece of cloth – material from an old pillowcase works well, or a piece torn from a set of flannel pajamas – and fold it over so that the paste is sealed inside the cloth.

Spread Vaseline over the patient’s chest to protect it, and then apply the cloth under her shirt. The first time you give your child a mustard plaster, check every ten minutes or so to be sure that the skin underneath is not reacting. Some children are more sensitive than others to the mustard’s “burn” effect. If your child reacts strongly to the plaster, next time use more flour in proportion to the mustard powder.

Why Mustard Helps With a Cold

Mixing the mustard powder with water causes a chemical reaction that creates heat. The cloth wrapping and Vaseline keep your child from experiencing too MUCH heat. This gentle heat relaxes the chest muscles and helps break up mucus congestion. Mustard plasters can also help with aching muscles – try one the next time you have a stiff neck or backache.

Remember, check the plaster every hour or two and remove it if you see redness or blistering on your child’s skin. And don’t let the mustard paste get into her eyes or mouth or she’ll have an unforgettably unpleasant experience.

During the summer months, bees and wasps are a menace to children playing outdoors. If you live in an area frequented by flying pests, you’d best be prepared to deal with the occasional sting.

Bees, the well-known honey-making insects, will occasionally sting a child who wanders too near a nest or accidentally steps on one of the workers. Fortunately, bees don’t sting unless they perceive the stingee as a direct threat to themselves or to the nest. When a bee stings, its barbed stinger stays in the wound and the bee dies of the resulting injury to itself. Naturally they avoid stinging unless absolutely necessary.

Wasps are another matter. Aside from the familiar yellow-jackets, many wasps don’t sting at all. The ones that do sting are far more dangerous than bees. Wasps have smooth stingers, so they can and do sting multiple times without injuring themselves. Their venom is used up after the first two or three stings, but they’ll keep right on stinging as many times as possible.

When your child is stung, try to find out if it was a bee or a wasp that did the stinging. Bee stings should be treated with ammonia to neutralize the venom; most glass cleaners can be used for this purpose. Try to extract the stinger first – a pair of tweezers and a magnifying glass can help. Wasp stings should be treated with vinegar and there usually isn’t a stinger to remove.

Why the Different Treatments?

Bee venom is acidic. Thus, treating it with a base (ammonia) will cancel out the venom. Wasp venom, on the other hand, is a base and so it can be nullified by applying an acid (vinegar) to the wound.

You can remember the difference by consulting the alphabet. A and B (ammonia and bee) are next to each other, as are V and W (vinegar and wasp).

Every mother should have a basic first aid kit in her home and in her car. There are certain basic first aid kit necessities that will cover just about any emergency should it arise. Instead of trying to create two separate first aid kits with different items, simply make them both the same. In fact, it may be simpler to just buy the kits already prepared. Whether you build your own or purchase them prepackaged, here are the necessary items to make your first aid kits complete.

A good first aid kit should include items for the personal safety of the one rendering aid as well as items to address the injury or illness. Therefore, start with personal necessities. Those items would include at least five pairs of surgical gloves, one pair of safety goggles and one CPR microshield. If anyone who would be using the first aid kit has a latex allergy, make sure that the gloves included in your kit are non-latex. Although safety goggles and a CPR microshield may seem strange, remember that the kit in your car could be used to help a stranger.

The necessary items in the kit will be used to render first aid for minor cuts and injuries as well as larger ones. Therefore, the kit should include various sizes of adhesive bandages, butterfly bandages, 2X2 and 4X4 gauze pads and medical tape. It should also include an elastic bandage, and a gauze roll. A Mylar survival blanket should be in the kit, too. Also include tweezers, alcohol pads, wound irrigation solution, hand sanitizer, triple antibiotic ointment, aspirin or pain reliever, anti-nausea and anti-diarrhea medicine, a thermometer, finger splints and a resealable plastic bag.

If anyone in your family requires prescription medication, like insulin or heart medication, it’s a good idea to include some back-up medication in each kit, too. Since medicines expire, remember to update your first aid kit regularly.

Over dressing or under dressing a child can lead to preventable illness and discomfort for a little one who can’t dress him or herself. Dress for the weather to keep kids healthy. That means anticipating changes in the weather as well.

In some places, the weather can change within the hour. Therefore dressing for the weather will take some planning and preparation. Winter is typically thought of as the season where weather related illnesses will befall a child. In some cases, it could be that the child simply isn’t prepared for rain, sudden temperature drops, and even ice and snow. Layers are a great way to make sure the child is snug. The child can add and remove clothing without much effort. If the weather will be wet, a pair of rubber boots will keep the feet warm and dry. There are many fun colors and prints that make wearing this bulky footwear fun. If waterproofing your child is just one more thing to keep up with, check with outdoors and camping stores. Many rain coats come with little compression bags that compactly carry a raincoat that easily fits in a backpack. These kinds of raincoats also make great little windbreakers.

It’s important that kids are dressed for the summer weather, too. Kids will run and play. An overdressed child can overheat and suffer dehydration. On the other hand, make sure the child is not over exposed to the sun. If the little one is fair complected, tanks may not be the best style. If your child insists, then put sunscreen on him or her, even on school days. Remind your children to drink plenty of water during warm weather. Also, make sure they wear the proper shoes for the proper activities. Little girls love flip flops. Don’t give in to that if the child will be running, climbing or playing in tall grass or wooded areas. Even closed summer shoes can be fun.

Our food tastes and choices are developed early in life. Therefore, it’s best to start your kids out right as soon as they start eating regular food. Safe food options for a healthy child are not nearly as hard to achieve as many would have us believe.

Safe and healthy do not have to be organic if that is a budget concern. It’s about avoiding junk food, fast food, sugar and fat. We all love those kinds of foods, but adults have a choice. Children may not. Try to steer them away from that early on.

Work to provide a balanced diet that is low in fat and big on fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. If you start here and stay here, then you have a better chance of your kid developing a lifelong taste for these things. These whole foods are full of natural vitamins and fiber. They’ll work to eliminate toxins from your child’s body as well as give them the vitamins and nutrition they need to grow and be healthy.

Go for low fat meats and dairy products. Organic is always better, but if it isn’t possible, make sure no growth hormones or antibiotics were used in the production of animal foods. By broiling meats and fish, the fats will naturally drain off into the broiling pan.

If you have to go through the fast food drive through, substitute apples or other fruit for fries. Order water or juice instead of soda. However, avoid juice that is mostly water and sugar. Keep candy and chips to a minimum. Some kids think carrots and apples are fun because they can be dipped in sauces or peanut butter.

If it all seems psychologically impossible to achieve, then involve your children in the preparation of the food. That makes it fun, and they also have control over their food while learning about healthy eating.

Asthma is a common allergy for kids, and it is triggered by certain environmental factors. There is the possibility that genetics can be a culprit, but whatever the cause, it is an ailment that is serious and can even be deadly if not properly treated. Not all asthma is allergy related, but if it appears to be caused by an allergic reaction, there are some things that can be done to reduce its occurrence. The things that cause asthma in kids are pretty common in many households.

Allergens that trigger asthma in kids are cigarette smoke, infections, cold air, pollen, dust, animal dander, exercise and stress. Most of these culprits are manageable. Certainly, no adult should be smoking around a child. As a factor that causes asthma in kids, it is the easiest one to control. Don’t expose kids to cigarette smoke. A clean house is a great preventative. Dust, animal hair and dander, and some pollen can be reduced with regular dusting, vacuuming, mopping and bed sheet changes. Certainly, colds and infections will happen. They may be a little harder to avoid. However, pay attention to whether asthma symptoms appear when your child is playing. It could be the symptoms are exercise related.

There are some schools of thought who suggest children in poverty are at higher risk for asthma due to poor living conditions. Rat droppings, cockroach infestations, and unsanitary living conditions are often higher in poor households. If the child lives in rental housing or old housing, the parents may not be at liberty to pull up old carpeting. There may be a lack of air conditioning, and certainly, stress will be higher for these children.

One of the things that make asthma worse for impoverished children is lack of good health care. Without access to medicine, education and regular doctor’s visits, these children are thought to be at particularly high risk for asthma related allergies.
