Dressing Correctly for Weather Conditions

how I stay warm

Image by D’Arcy Norman via Flickr

Dressing right for the weather can be a pretty important health factor whether in the middle of a hard winter or summer vacationing at the beach.

In cold and wet weather, it is most important to stay not only warm, but also dry. In extremely cold weather you will want to think in terms of layers:

1.     Skin Layer; long underwear is best, as it drives wetness away from skin and helps it evaporate

2.     Middle layer; think Warm! Wool and/or fleece are safe bets.

3.     Outer layer; this is the protective layer and should protect you from water and wetness.

Of course, hats, shades, mittens and gloves are also very important, not to mention the right kind of boots and socks.

In hot weather, dressing correctly is just as important for health; too much sun can be overwhelming.

Protect your head with hats or scarves. In an area with very little shade it is best to wear clothes that actually cover your body rather than having too much skin exposed. Look for natural materials like a natural cotton, that can breathe; this will keep you much cooler than a synthetic material.

Choose natural materials in shoes whether you are wearing sandals or sneakers. Shoes made from real leather, or canvas, are the best ventilation for your feet.

Again sunglasses are important as well as gloves, if you are riding a bike or motorcycle.

Be aware that in extremely hot weather, more clothes can be better for your health than stripping down to the minimum.  This is because a layer of clothes can help you retain water as well as shield you from serious sunburn.

Developing Healthy Children

When children are growing, they need a healthy variety of foods, in order to have the best possible health that a parent can provide. This goes beyond vitamins and minerals, but includes a hard look at fats, sugars, and sodium that a child takes in at every meal. Providing  child with optimal foods can prepare their bodies for a long and healthy life for many years to come. What many people do not realize, is that fat cell development, circulatory development, and internal functions are changing and forming until a child has finished growing. This means that whatever a child has set while still growing, is what they will have for their lifetime. For instance, if a child has a weight issue as a child, their body has developed more fat, and they will have that additional cell development the rest of their lives.

As parents, we can shape our children to be healthy, active, and fit, so that they can carry on those attributes as they age. Encourage your children to exercise by playing outside. We live in a society where children stay indoors, playing video games, and they do not exercise, through play, outdoors anymore. This has led to an increase in childhood obesity, and other childhood health issues related to poor diet and lack of exercise. The other thing that you can do is encourage your children to complete chores in the home, but make it fun, by making it a race. The serves two purposes, it helps you with housework, and it gets your child moving. It has been shown that housework, vacuuming, sweeping, cleaning mirrors, can burn up to 300 calories an hour. Make exercise a family affair. By including yourself in the exercise that you are asking of your children, this shows them the importance of what you are asking, as well as create a bonding moment.

Keeping Kids Safe

Keeping kids safe involves developing a healthy and nurturing relationship between parents and children. This type of relationship requires a great deal of effort and work but the long term results in providing a safe environment for children are most rewarding.
There are many ways that such a nurturing relationship can be developed. One way is to make sure that children know they are loved even when they might do something wrong. Another is to encourage children by praising their achievements and accomplishments and recognizing their skills as they develop them. Parents also need to spend time with their children and plan activities that can be enjoyed together. When it comes to discipline, parents should not be physical with their children. There are many alternatives to physical discipline such as offering choices, redirecting the child’s attention or simply using a “time out’.
There are also many ways in which to make sure that children are well cared for and consequently can be kept safe. One way is to insure that the foods they eat are nutritious. Planning regular mealtimes that the entire family can enjoy helps to make sure that children are getting the right nutrition at the right time.
Keeping kids safe also requires that they receive good and regular medical attention. Even though care of children begins before they are born, after they are born, it is important to take them to see the doctor on a regular basis so that he or she can monitor their development and give them their required vaccinations against certain diseases.
Watching over children is also important. Infants should always be within sight of their parents unless they are in a crib or other place of safety. Once children begin to crawl, the house should be made childproof so that children will not hurt themselves. The selection of caregivers should also require special attention so that children will be safe in the absence of parents.
